prepare skin for valentines day glow

Prepare Your Skin For A Stunning Valentines Day Glow

Being A Girl Is Hard Sometimes!

Why? Well, because special occasions like Valentine’s Day take a lot more of preparation than simply choosing greeting cards and chocolates.

How? We want to look good, yeah, all the time. And Valentine’s Day is so much special, one because it is the day of love and two, because we want to look effortlessly pretty for the special someone.

Girls, we have always got your back. Here you go with everything essential you need to know and look dreamlike simply because you want to turn heads wherever you go.

Skin Preparation
We know you have carefully kept your new makeup products in your makeup bag as you are saving them for special occasion. But you should know that irrespective of your skin type, it can be unpredictable at times. Even the expensive makeup items can be a reason for skin allergy or reactions. Therefore, you must try all the skin products in advance to save you from any unwanted situation on the day itself. Also, if you’re going to try a new facial or a new face treatment, you should do it at least a fortnight before the D Day.

Exfoliation
Exfoliation is a great way to reduce the dead skin and have healthy pores. Oh, but wait! Did you ever notice that you get redness on your skin or bruises when you go for dermabrasion? So, ladies please don’t exfoliate your skin on the same day whether you are doing it at home or getting it done from a professional. Even if you don’t have redness or bruises, the exfoliation may leave your skin sensitive and the skin products may hurt & create tiny bumps on your skin. So, do it well in advance, may be a week ago. Another common mistake girls make is using the same exfoliant/scrub for your body and your face. Your facial skin is quite sensitive than that of other body parts.

Massage
When we talk about skin preparation massage is the most gentle and relaxing way. Face & body massage improves the blood circulation Massage To start preparing the skin, there’s nothing better than going to a spa and getting a face and body massage.  If you’re too busy, no worries, you can do this yourself.  Using the tips of your fingers massage your skin in circular motion and always going upwards.  You can use Argan oil for dry skin or cotton extract lotion for sensitive/oily skin.

Face Mask
Special occasions demand special attention. Try the dark chocolate mask for a deep relaxation. The good thing is that you can make it yourself at home. Heat the dark chocolate in a bowl to melt it, shouldn’t be too hot though. Mix in some almond oil and one egg yolk. Apply it gently on your face and neck and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Finally you can wash it with lukewarm water.  Now be ready to get ultra smooth, soft & supple skin.

Hair Care
Let’s face it. No matter how good your skin is or make up is but no look can be complete without healthy & shiny hair.  Try this homemade hair mask for lustrous and bouncy tresses. Mash one ripe banana, add in one tbl. spoon of organic honey and olive oil. Mix it well or you can blend it if you want. Apply it generously all over your hair; allow it to stay on for at least half an hour. Then you can wash your hair with your regular shampoo and there you have it. Super shiny and gorgeous hair!

We bet these tips would make you look your best self. Just let loose and feel the love you’re surrounded with. Smile & conquer the world!

winter acne treatment

Winter Acne: How to Deal With It

Did you think acne only break out in summer? Are you surprised why you have to deal with acne even in winter? Well, there can be many possible reasons to have acne problem even in winter.

Stay Hydrated
So, the main reason of why acne is bothering you in winter is less consumption of water. As Dr. Nivedita Dadu says, ‘’ Our skin becomes dry because of the cold winter weather. Please ensure that you drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and flush the toxins.’’

Keep your face clean
The one thing that you need to take care of is to use a face cleanser which doesn’t dry out your skin and rather a hydrating one. The moist winter air can easily clog your pores with various pollutants. Cleansing and exfoliating is necessary for facial hygiene.

Moisturize, Moisturize & Moisturize
Yes, we can’t emphasize enough on how important it is to keep your skin moisturized in winter. A common mistake most girls do is to use a moisturizer which is oil based. If you have an oily skin, you should prefer using water based moisturizer or a facial gel. However, having an oily skin doesn’t mean you can skip the moisturizing part. We at Skinology also suggest using facials or face packs which deeply nourish your skin. Fruit packs or facials are good for all skin types.

Avoid too much Exfoliation
Of course you need to exfoliate your skin in winter as well but excessive exfoliation can drain the essential oils from your skin and make it dry. Too much dryness can be a reason for winter breakouts.

Exercise and Rejuvenate
Just because it’s winter, you can’t skip your morning routine. It might seem to be a great effort to wake and go for a walk in the cold outside, so what? You can exercise indoors, maybe you can do yoga or dance. However, staying indoors all the time isn’t advisable because if you take in refreshing morning air it will rejuvenate your skin and keep winter breakouts away from you.

What not to do
Small things/changes make all the difference.

  • Do not take long hot showers; you can rather use lukewarm water.
  • Do not use oily cosmetics or skin care products.
  • Strong perfumes or products with pungent fragrances shall be avoided as it can cause skin irritation.
  • Do not pick on acne.

Do let us know if these tips were helpful to prevent or reduce acne this winter. Write us at info@skinology.in.

Hypertrichosis: Symptoms and causes

What is hypertrichosis?

Hypertrichosis is the excessive growth of hair, which is abnormal given for the person’s age, sex, body area or race. This is different from Hirsutism in which women experience hair growth in areas that generally fall under the male pattern of hair distribution.

The commonest symptom of hypertrichosis is the development of excess hair in small isolated patches (localised hypertrichosis) or all over the body (generalised hypertrichosis). Some with this disorder may exhibit enlarged gums and defects of the teeth as well.

Types of hypertrichosis

Hypertrichosis may be congenital (present during birth) or acquired.

  1. Congenital hypertrichosis is generally caused by genetic mutations. It may affect men and women differently, and may even impact the whole body, covering one totally in hair or just in isolated areas such as the upper part of the body, face, elbows etc.
  2. Acquired hypertrichosis occurs post birth. Causes of it may include side effects of certain drugs, certain types of cancer and metabolic abnormalities. It may also occur due to trauma. This generally causes hair growth around or in the facial region such as the upper lip, chin and cheeks that may follow a certain pattern.

Causes of Hypertrichosis:

  1. Genes – Genetic mutations has been seen to affect the development of hypertrichosis.
  2. Cancer – It may develop in those suffering from cancers of some forms. This form of hair growth is also known as malignant down and generally affects the face.
  3. Malnutrition – Eating disorders affect the metabolism of a person, which might lead to the development of hypertrichosis.
  4. Drugs – Certain drugs have been found to cause hormonal imbalances, which can induce excessive hair growth.
  5. Injuries – Trauma such as head or cerebral injuries or exposure to certain chemicals may also cause hypertrichosis. Porphyrias, which are disorders affecting the skin and or nerves, may also lead to its development.

4 Common Combing Mistakes That Lead To Excessive Hairloss

Common Hairloss Mistakes

You will be surprised to know that about 35 million men and 21 million women suffer from excessive hairfall in India. Excessive hair fall can be the result of certain illnesses, hormonal changes, over-use of hair products that contain chemicals or a poor diet. What you may not have considered is that you can also lose a lot of hair by combing it the wrong way.

Check if you’re making these common combing mistakes.

1. Are you combing your hair from the roots down?
If you’re combing your hair you should always start from the middle while working it downwards. Move the comb upwards (near the roots) only when there are no more tangles remaining in the bottom half.

If you start combing from your roots, you may have to fight more tangles on the way to the bottom. This induces strain on your scalp, and increases hair breakage. The end result is weak hair and roots, and more hair fall.

2. Are you combing post the application of a hair product?
A comb should never be used just after the application of a hair paste, serum or cream for treatment or styling. You must use only your fingers to comb through your hair once you’ve applied a styling product.

If you use a comb post-application of a styling product, it not only loses its effect, but may also harm your hair and its texture.Consequently, it may lead to increased breakage and hair loss over time.

3. Are you detangling your hair after shampooing or washing?
Hair is known to be at its weakest when wet, which can also make it prone to tangling. Combing and excessive pulling of tangled, wet hair increases your chances of hair breakage and eventual hair loss.

To avert water-induced frowns, you can try giving a comb-through before wetting your hair in the shower. Alternatively, you can also try combing your hair during a shower. Apply the conditioner first; next, untangle the strands by using only your fingers, and then use a wide-toothed comb just before washing.

4. Are you regularly back-combing your hair?
Sometimes people back-comb their hair from the roots working towards the ends. This hair teasing technique adds volume and texture to your hair. Although it’s a great trick, its regular use may damage your hair cuticles, which as a result, may also ruin your hair’s quality, lead to frizzy hair and increase breakage and hair loss.

To get the element of volume without the damage, you can try light hair sprays, which help you in getting a similar look.

6 Effective Ways to reduce the wrinkles Warts – Cauliflower-like Skin Inflammation

Cauliflower like Skin Inflammation

Warts are small, rough patches on the skin (resembling cauliflowers) that are caused due to the human papillomavirus (hpv- a dna virus that can infect humans). In this condition, only the topmost layer of your skin gets infected and acquires a rough texture. Warts are not fatal (they do not cause cancer), but they are contagious in nature and do not vanish easily.

Read on to find the most effective ways to reduce warts.

1. Over-the-counter wart removers
Over-the-counter wart treatments containing salicylic acid (a type of fungicide) as an active ingredient are commonly used for effective removal of warts. These medications generally eliminate warts by removing the topmost layer of the skin, following the peel-off process.

2. Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy, also known as freezing therapy, is generally performed by a dermatologist and consists of the use of liquid nitrogen for freezing the warts. The application of the chemical results in the formation of a blister around the warts, which shed off after about a week. It takes almost 3 to 4 weeks to have completely wart-free skin. This method proves to be more effective when used with salicylic acid-based wart removers.

3. Laser treatment
Another form of wart removal is pulsed-dye laser treatment. An ablative co2 laser acts by cutting and burning the wart. In this type of treatment the affected blood vessels are burnt, leading to the death of the infected tissue, following which the wart too disappears. However, this method is not commonly used if other treatment methods tend to work as it is painful and may leave behind scars.

4. Vaccine
Sometimes your dermatologist may recommend the use of human papillomavirus (hpv) vaccine to successfully eliminate warts.

5. Immunosuppressive Drugs
In this type of treatment each wart is injected with a shot of immunosuppressive drugs, a medicine that fights cancer. However, this treatment is not preferred generally as it may be painful and comes with side effects like nail loss if the wart is present on the finger.

6. Immune therapy
When warts refuse to vanish after the use of all common treatments, this method is put into use. This type of treatment involves the use of medications or solutions, which strengthens your immune system so that it can repel warts. In this case your warts may be injected with an antigen or a solution or cream may be applied on them.

Conditioning Before Shampoo Vs Post Shampoo – What’s Ideal?

Conditioning Before Shampoo Vs Post Shampoo

Conditioners and shampoos, you need both for an appropriate hair care regimen. Just like most other people, you might have the confusion about conditioner use – whether to use it before you shampoo your hair or when you’re done with shampooing.

Read on to find out what you should be doing.

1. Hair Type: A factor that determines your use of a conditioner before you shampoo or after it depends on your hair type. For individuals who have dry or thick hair, using a conditioner after you shampoo is the most apt, especially during the winter months when complaints of flyaway hairs are very common. Conditioning before you apply shampoo to your hair is ideal if you’ve fine hair as it provides your hair with much needed nourishment. Additionally, it allows the shampoo to distribute evenly all over your hair.

2. Greasy Hair: Applying a conditioner before you shampoo your hair is most apt for individuals whose hair is prone to oiliness. This is because it helps you in thoroughly washing away the grease that gets build up in your hair when it’s time to shampoo. The regimen of shampoo and conditioning afterwards doesn’t ensure a proper elimination of the problem.

3. The Problem of Residues: If you condition your hair before shampooing, you can rest assure that no residues get left behind on the scalp. This is not the case when you condition your hair afterwards. Many a time, if you don’t rinse properly residues of the conditioner used get left behind, thereby weighing down your hair.

Unless your hair is of normal texture, conditioning before shampooing can prove to be beneficial for your hair.

Bathing Soap vs. Body Wash: What’s Better When You Take a Shower?

Bathing Soap vs. Body Wash

The most important part of skincare is keeping your skin cleansed and fresh. But before that, it is imperative to find the right product for the same. Skin type varies from person to person, and hence finding skincare goods most suited to your skin makes all the difference.

Bathing habits directly affect the quality of your skin, which involves picking the appropriate cleanse; i. E. Choosing between a body soap and body wash. Each has a different set of characteristics and comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Let’s find out which one is better for your skin.

Why you should choose bathing soap bar:

  •  it is more effective in removing dirt through deep cleansing
  •  it is suited to skin that is excessively oily in nature as it contains ingredients that are highly effective in stripping off excess oil from the skin

Why you should not choose bathing soap bar:

  •  it tends to strip the skin of its natural oils and moisture, making it dry and flaky
  •  it is unhygienic in case of sharing between individuals as soaps tend to accumulate the dirt from your skin due to direct body contact

Reasons to pick a body wash:

  •  it has a very mild and gentle effect on the skin in comparison to soaps
  •  it keeps the skin moisturized by preserving natural oils
  •  it is more hygienic than bar soaps in case of interpersonal sharing
  •  it is the most suitable option for dry skin

Reasons to ditch a body wash:

  •  it contains a large amount of artificial additives and preservatives that can do more harm to your skin than good, giving rise to allergic reactions in some cases

So, who’s the winner of the two?

You must certainly base the choice on what’s best for your skin type. Body soap is more compatible with oily skin while dry skin is better suited for body wash. A body wash, however, is much more gentle on your skin.

4 Types of Life-Threatening Rashes

Types of Life Threatening Rashes

Rashes are common skin problems but shouldn’t be taken casually at all. Although most rashes are mild and do not create much problem, some might turn grow to become life-threatening.

These are:

1. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) – This skin rash is the result of a severe allergic reaction to medication. The condition affects the skin and mucous membranes. Various medicines, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anticonvulsants, antibiotics, and sulphonamides might trigger this type of rash. It is characterized by painful lesions emerging in clusters.

2. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) – Mostly affecting babies and young children under the age of five, this skin disease brings on extensive blisters with red skin that looks burnt or scalded. This syndrome is caused by infection with strains of Staphylococcus bacteria.

3. Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) – This unusual autoimmune skin condition gives rise to excruciating blisters on the skin, which often go on to the mouth, throat, nose and even genitals. The open sores from this disease often lead to infections and acute cases can even cause lung infections and lesions. This rash has no cure but is often treated with corticosteroids, antibiotics or immunosuppressants. If untreated, it can even cause death.

4. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) – TSS is often caused by an overgrowth of Staphylococcus bacteria with the infection spreading throughout the body. Besides these bacteria, infections from surgical wounds contaminated nasal packing after nasal surgery and infections after baby birth are probable causes. This life-threatening rash generally affects teens and young adults, most of them being women. It can affect mucus membranes of mouth and eyes although there are no blisters or skin bumps. One can experience slight dizziness and high fever as well as swelling of the joints and eyelids. This skin condition often affects the liver, kidneys, the heart, and the brain.

What is the Most Effective Hair Regrowth Treatment?

Hair Regrowth Treatment

Hair thinning and loss of hair is very common in today’s lifestyle. Excessive stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, a poor diet can be listed as the major environmental culprits but genetics too plays an important role in premature hair loss. There are plenty of hair growth products that promise results but very few work.
Here are some effective hair re-growth treatments that have been proven to be successful.

Androgen Inhibitors- If you are affected by male hormone, it will cause your hair follicles to become smaller until they have shrunk to the point they can’t grow any hair. Androgen Inhibitors reduces the effects of DHT up to 70% and even causes hair to grow back. It can take from 3 months up to a year for it to show any results. This has been often referred as the best hair loss treatment available with little to no side effects.

Minoxidil- Minoxidil was originally a remedy to treat high blood pressure, but several users reported its hair growth effects, it was then manufactured as a topical medication for hair loss. Minoxidil works by stimulating the hair follicles by enlarging the blood vessels which causes more nutrients and oxygen to flow into the follicle leading to hair growth. Users can notice significant growth from 2 to 3 months of using Minoxidil.

Prostaglandin analogs- These are relatively new options which are currently being examined of their hair growth potentials. These are mainly used as eyelash enhancements now but scientists are hopeful that they soon can be treated for hair loss.
